Sociophysics is, in essence, the application of models and methods inspired by physics to understand and predict social phenomena. Instead of focusing on individuals in isolation, it studies society as a system of interacting particlespeople, groups, or organizationsand seeks to identify patterns in the diffusion of opinions, decisions, and behaviors. Although human beings are complex, many social phenomena emerge statistically, much like in gases or magnetic materials: it is not possible to predict the behavior of each atom, but it is possible to estimate collective magnitudes such as pressure or magnetization.
